Investment Approach

We have developed an investment approach that we believe will help us to achieve our vision. We aim to preserve capital and still provide for a consistent level of annual grant funding, with the flexibility to respond to opportunities as they arise.

Foundation North has a globally diversified investment portfolio with considerable assets, or pūtea, that are held on behalf of the communities of Auckland and Northland.

Through impact investment, Foundation North aims to prudently leverage a portion of its investment portfolio to support its charitable funding focus areas - increasing equity, social inclusion and regenerative environments. The addition of impact investment in the Foundation’s investment portfolio widens the set of tools available to the Foundation for creating positive impact and complements the Foundation’s significant granting activity.

Foundation North has recently invested in an impact investment fund which will be externally managed. The Foundation has made an initial investment of $20 million into the Fund – Te Pae ki te Rangi which will be our primary vehicle for undertaking impact investment. Te Pae ki te Rangi has already made a series of investments whose Kaupapa aligns with the Foundation’s main focus areas. While investment through a fund is the Trustees’ preferred avenue for impact investing, Foundation North remains open to considering direct impact investment opportunities, especially co-funding opportunities with other aligned investors.
