Foundation North is thrilled for everyone involved in He Korowai Trust to see their CEO Ricky Houghton become the Kiwibank New Zealand Local Hero of the Year 2018.
Ricky received the award in recognition of his dedication to improving the quality of life of whānau in the Far North, in particular developing housing and employment initiatives that support young people to stay in Northland, to remain connected with whānau and have a secure and sustainable future.
In 2017 He Korowai Trust was awarded $2.2m from Foundation North's Catalysts For Change funding programme to go towards setting up and operating Sweet As, a new skills academy providing training, education and eventually employment (in the construction, painting and decorating trades) for young people in Kaitaia.
